GFC Boys 2011/12 Spring 2022

Updated: May 20, 2022

The GFC Boys 2011/12 team started the spring 2022 season off with a few changes resulting from their previous season's hard work and performance. They moved from division four up to division three where the competition is more difficult*. With this comes a 9v9 formation rather than the 7v7 formation and the season kicked off quickly with two games after a single practice.

It's important to remember our focus continues to be on individual and team growth in all four key components of the game rather than just winning games- technical, tactical, physical and psychosocial.** To continue to grow our team's technical skills, practice has been focused on passing & receiving and shooting. So when you hear the coach yell in game "pass!", that's a keyword to let the team know the person with the ball 1) needs support from teammates by finding or creating space and making yourself a passing option, and 2) the one possessing the ball should pass to move forward if possible, or pass back to reset and build out. We continue to struggle with supporting players getting open, holding on to the ball when outnumbered 1v2 or even 1v3 rather than passing, and passing with the correct accuracy and weight (speed of passing).

What we are trying to do:

What we actually do:

JH6 pass has too little weight allowing pressure on JB10. OC16 goes into closed space instead of open space leaving no option for the pass.

and a bit better this time…

JH6 and DH31 are too close leaving JR2 the only option. High pressure causes us to kick the ball out rather than control it.

So how do we get there? Practice, practice, practice.

Deliberate practice****- focused attention, remove mindless repetitions, set specific goals for improvement and incorporate feedback and measurement.

Play like we practice- put our practice techniques into our game. Afterall, the reason for practice is to improve the game.

Practice on your own- don’t think that two hours of practice a week is going to improve our skills enough to be competitive at division three. Practice foot skills and dribbling skills on your own for at least 15 minutes each day. Better yet, join teammates when they get together for additional practice, usually on Mondays and Wednesdays at 5:00 at the Canton Middle School field.

1, 2, 3, GFC!
